Microsoft‘s promise of lower-cost Surface laptops is finally here and available for under $300 is the ASUS VivoBook W202 with Windows 10 S. The Windows 10 S OS is a Microsoft Store-centric version of Windows 10 that is limited in its third-party software installation. Despite getting an introduction during a Microsoft Education event and primarily targeting the education market, the “S” does not actually stand for “Student” according to Microsoft. The price is an enticing option for students who want an alternative to Chromebooks and other low-cost laptops.
Inside the system is running an Intel Celeron N3350 processor. This is a dual-core although a slightly more powerful quad-core Pentium N4200 CPU option is also available. The 11.6-inch display has a resolution of 1366 x 768, with anti-glare and ASUS Splendid technology. In terms of storage, it comes with 64GB of eMMC. There is also an SD card reader and two USB 3.0 ports available.
The ASUS VivoBook W202 also has a built-in 802.11AC WiFi/BT4.1 feature for networking. A front facing camera and microphone-in/headphone-out jack completes its video conferencing capability. There is even an HDMI port available for users who want to dock the laptop to a larger display as well.
The two-cell 38Whrs Polymer battery supposedly lasts for up to 11 hours.
The ASUS VivoBook W202 has an MSRP of $279 USD. According to The Verge, a Windows 10 Home version of the W202 will also be available for $299 USD.
