It was already known that Microsoft was interested in creating a portable Xbox console. The company itself confirmed that they were working on several prototypes, but that it would take some time before a final product was available on the market. However, it seems that the release of a Portable Xbox could happen sooner than expected, possibly in 2025.

ASUS Behind the Project

According to the latest rumors and leaks reported by WindowsCentral, ASUS, not Microsoft, will take charge of this portable console project. They are expected to announce a functional portable gaming device during the summer of this year. This console, known as “Project Kennan,” will combine ASUS’s experience with its ROG Ally and ROG Ally X devices, along with Microsoft’s collaboration to create a gaming platform based on PC hardware.

A More Integrated Xbox Experience

This “Portable Xbox” could be Microsoft’s way of developing a portable console platform with deeper integration into the Xbox ecosystem. The design would closely follow the aesthetics of Xbox consoles and controllers. However, it’s important to note that this won’t be a console that can run traditional Xbox games. Instead, it will focus on multiplatform games that are available for both Windows and Xbox, including those that allow cross-platform play with a single purchase.

Some sources even suggest that this project could be the ASUS ROG Ally 2, but with more direct collaboration with Microsoft. While the current ROG Ally and ROG Ally X already run Windows 11 and support Microsoft’s gaming ecosystem, they don’t have the same integration that the Steam Deck has with Steam OS.

Microsoft is also said to be planning to work with more manufacturers to launch different ranges of portable consoles. This project is rumored to be led by Roanne Sones, the head of Xbox hardware, and is believed to have the code name “BaySide.”
