The AMD Radeon HD 6900 series cards are the latest in AMD’s graphics card product catalogue and are their flagship cards when it comes to single GPU with the 5970 still dominating the dual-GPU market.
The 6900 series are based around the Cayman GPU and offers several improvements across various aspects of the cards including 3D performance, power consumption improvements and overall performance when compared to its predecessors. Whilst all of this is a step in the right direction and is always music to my ears, the feature that has really tickled my fancy is the possibility that a user can unlock the 6950 into a fully fledged HD 6970 for no extra cost. This is all performed using a simple BIOS flash and with the ability to switch between multiple BIOS configurations on the HD 6950, it seems it’s a no brainer as to what people will do once they’ve purchased one.
Today showcases Asus’s effort at a slightly pre-overclocked version of the HD 6950 with some of the patented features that Asus have to offer including Voltage Tweak, Asus Smart Doctor, Asus Gamer OSD and much more. The questions we’ll be asking is to how it performs and will it unlock to 6970 territory.
