ASUS ROG STRIX GO CORE Gaming Headset Review

How Much Does it Cost?

The headset should be available on major retailers, but I think it could be sold-out right at this moment. I found the wireless one for £129.98, but that is a much more premium version and I would expect this wired one to be much MUCH cheaper, hence the “CORE” part of its name. You can check for up to date pricing and stock information on Amazon in the UK here and in the US here.

Overview

I really like what ASUS has to offer here, it’s just a clean, stylish and great performing headset. They’ve focused on keeping this one fairly simple, it’s just a plug and play bit of kit, and I like that. Of course, it offers up a 3.5mm 4-pole jack as standard, so it works on consoles by plugging it into a compatible controller; PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, etc. Then the same is true of most tablets and phones that didn’t have the courage to remove the bloody 3.5mm jack.

Build Quality

The headset also comes with an extension/Y-splitting cable, allowing you to use it on your desktop computer. Strangely though, the extension cable is braided by the main cable is not. It’s hardly a deal-breaker though. Glass half full not half empty I guess.

It’s a very light headset, but remarkably durable feeling. You can twist and turn, bend, extend and more and it all feels quite rigid. It is strong in all the places that matter really. It’s also very simple and clean looking. There’s no big RGB lights, no outlandish logos, just good construction overall.

Performance

There’s very little configuration needed, which is great. Just plug and play. There’s a dial on the side for volume and a switch for muting the microphone though, which are certainly welcome. The closed back design locks out a lot of ambient noise, and there’s a good tight fit around your ears. This does make your ears a little warm on hotter days though, but that’s the trade off for a tighter sound and improved bass response.

The hi-res audio support is certainly welcome, and that extended range ensures great audio reproduction overall. Movies, music and games all sounded great on this headset, and it made light work of the more extreme reaches of my music collection.

Should I Buy One?

If I could improve anything, it would be making the stock cable removable and braided. However, beyond that, if you can find stock and prices that are favourable, then absolutely. ASUS has a strong history and reputation and their STRIX branding on goes on the absolute best gaming hardware they have. The ASUS ROG STRIX GO CORE is a solid performer.
