Intel NASPT USB Storage Performance

USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports are a common feature on many of today’s consumer routers, including those provided as part of an internet package by the ISP. It is therefore only wise that we look at how these ports perform when sharing content out across the network. To do the testing we look over to Intel’s NASPT utility with its twelve test scenarios to see what throughput is on offer between our test bench and the Patriot Magnum 256GB USB3.0 flash drive that we use for USB testing on system reviews. Whilst a number of routers may host two USB ports, only the fastest port will be put to the test (USB3.0) leaving the other port free for USB printers for example.

Testing the USB3.0 performance of our Patriot flash drive over a wired connection, NASPT records an average, yet consistent data transfer speed. Whilst these speeds are nowhere near that recorded from a dedicated NAS, for the simple act of sharing a few files across the network, they are fast enough to stream a movie for example.
