I’m going to be honest, I was never a fan of the Sabertooth styling, as it was meant to mimic a military style camouflage but is slightly off with the colour representation. Through the past week of using this board and seeing it out of the corner of my eye, it has grown on me slightly and isn’t as ugly as I first thought, but it’s still only going to appeal to a select amount of consumers on a style basis.
Feature wise it certainly packs a punch, especially when looking at the various cooling aspects that are included with the thermal armour, and thermal radar. Other key features that will seperate this board from the rest is the improved DIGI+ power control and Asus SSD Caching. All of this features will leave you expecting great results and that’s exactly what you get.
The results were good, and with a few tweaks from a fully stable BIOS and Intel updates, we believe this board could be even better. Certain aspects that Intel have developed in, such as the quad channel memory, just seems to be a bit of a farce and doesn’t offer much, if any noticeable gains over a Z68 dual channel memory system.
Overclocking wise, we were able to hit fairly high numbers and with stability being the key point of this board, we found that the overclock was 100% stable for prolonged periods of time and with the ability to alter the cooling, it allowed for us to push further than we could without those key cooling features.
Looking back at all of the things that make this board great, makes us shy away when we think how much it’s potentially going to cost but with a retail price of £207.79 from Scan, it’s a lot cheaper than we first anticipated. which ticks another box in our books.
To sum up, it really is a great board that will only appeal to a certain market of users who want a few more features and a bit more flexability over the Pro and Deluxe boards, but without going the whole hog and plumping your cash up for a ROG Rampage IV which is a bit more expensive and offers a lot of features that the typical user won’t want or need, let alone even knowing what they are. If you’re after a board that offers rock-hard stability, reliability and offers the performance to match, all for a relatively low price point, we don’t think that you’ll be disappointed with the Sabertooth X79 motherboard from Asus.
Nice review. Too bad there is no z68 version of this board. The only negative thing is probably the fact that it will be hard to find a buyer for this mb once you decide to upgrade because this style is really not for everyone.
As you stated Asus are making quite a few boards, I agree that this board may not be for everyone, but the fact is that it is there if you require it, I am afraid that any of the top end boards that Asus produce are out of my price range, but if you can afford it and this is just what you require, then go for it. It all really depends on the end user, once again Andy nice review.
