ASUS to outsource some motherboard production to ‘Cal-Comp’

ASUS have decided that it is in the best interests of the company if they outsource between 5 and 6 million motherboard units to being produced with a third party. Cal-Comp of Thailand is the candidate to produce 5 to 6 million of ASUS’ forecast yearly total of 24.5 million motherboards (so roughly 25%). ASUS aren’t new to the idea of getting their products produced by other companies, in the past they have used Pegatron as a third party to produce a lot of their stuff. They have also frequently used small Chinese ODMs (original design manufacturers) in addition to companies like Pegatron to help reach the huge demand they have placed on them every year.

No reason for the shift was specified, we can only assume demand for 2012 of 24.5 million motherboard units is too much for ASUS and that it needs extra production help or maybe current third party agreements are getting costly and unproductive. We know Cal-Comp currently has production bases in Thailand, China, Malaysia, Brazil and Mexico and is mainly manufacturing PC peripherals and components such as printers, external hard drive and printed circuit board (PCB) as well as communication products such as set-top box (STB), handsets and Bluetooth earphones.
