ASUS unveils the PadFone 2

ASUS aren’t really a big player in the smartphone game, but they have been enjoying the fruits of their labour in the tablet world for a while now. The original PadFone didn’t do quite well, but the new PadFone 2 is looking light a mighty fine smartphone.

ASUS’ PadFone 2 sports a 4.7-inch 720p Super IPS+ panel, Qualcomm’s quad-core Snapdragon S4 processor,  a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera backed up by a 1.2-megapixel front-facing snapper, and a much thinner PadFone Station. Oh, did we tell you that the PadFone 2 docks itself into the PadFone Station and turns it into a 10.1-inch tablet – yeah!

PadFone 2 also sports 2GB of RAM, NFC compatibility, a 2140mAh battery, up to 64GB of internal storage with 50GB of ASUS WebStorage, LTE support is also provided. The tablet part of things gives us a 10.1-inch 1280×800 IPS display, and a 5000mAh battery. It ships with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich but ASUS have promised an Android 4.1 Jelly bean update really soon.

The PadFone 2 itself weighs 135g whilst the PadFone Station weighs in at 514g for a total of 649g when both used together – not bad at all.

Availability wise, expect the PadFone 2 to launch in Taiwan as early as next week, but it looks like the rest of the world will be waiting a little while longer yet.
