ASUSTOR introduced two new NAS devices to their 70 series, the AS7004T-i5 and the AS7010T-i5. As you might have guessed by the name, the new systems are powered by an Intel i5 processor and come with 4 and 10 drive bays respectively.
“The AS7004-i5 and AS7010-i5 offer advanced performance that not only maintains the operational stability of the system, but also allows for the running of multiple Apps simultaneously, providing smooth access in multi-user enterprise environments,” said Johnny Chen, Product Manager at ASUSTOR. “Furthermore, the AS7010-i5 features 10 disk bays allowing it to easily handle large multimedia files, making it the perfect choice for media professionals.”
Processor and Memory
The Intel Core i5-4590S is a quad-core processor with a base clock of 3.0GHz and automatic overclocking to 3.7GHz when it is needed. The systems come with 8GB DDR3 SO-DIMM memory installed, but you can upgrade them to 16GB. One of the advantages of a Core processor over the alternative options which only support up to 8GB total memory.
Intel’s Core processors also come with integrated AES-NI hardware encryption engine and hardware media acceleration engine which supports the H.264 (AVC), H.265 (HEVC), MPEG-4 Part 2, MPEG-2, and VC-1 formats.
Drive Bays and Expansion
With the AS7004T-i5’s four and the AS7010T-i5’s 10 drive bays, you already get a lot of storage ability. Up to 40TB and 100TB using 10TB hard disk drives. If that shouldn’t be enough, then that’s no problem. The 70 series supports the new AS6004U expansion units, and you can connect up to three of these. That adds up to 12 more drive bays to the units, allowing you to get an impressive 220TB storage.
Networking
Both of the new systems come with two Gigabit Ethernet RJ 45 ports, and for the 4-bay unit, that’s it. The 10-bay unit has one additional feature, a PCI-Express expansion slot where you can install a 10GbE network adapter.
Other connections
NAS devices come with a lot more connectors than just networking. These two come with an HDMI 1.4a and S/PDIF port as well as an infrared receiver for use as a media station. They also feature three USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, and two eSATA ports.
The USB 2.0 ports are perfect for mouse and keyboard when you use it as an HTPC replacement because you can do that too, while the USB 3.0 and eSATA ports are perfect for fast external storage and storage expansion.
AS7004T-i5 and AS7010T-i5 Availability and Pricing
ASUSTOR didn’t reveal a price for the new units at this time. They are scheduled to make a real appearance at Computex and once that happens, we are sure to know more.
