Baldur’s Gate 3 Is Thriving Even More Than a Year Ago, Larian Studios Credits Mods

Baldur’s Gate 3 is a success, and it seems redundant to say so, but what is truly surprising is that it continues to maintain excellent numbers over the long term, without losing ground even as time passes.
The Impact of Mods on Long-Term Success
The reason for the success, according to the director of publishing at Larian Studios, Michael Douse, is the introduction of mods. Even more interestingly, the momentum is growing: Baldur’s Gate 3’s player count is up compared to the same period last year.
Michael Douse shared that the average number of daily active players has grown by 20% compared to 2023. “Mods are good,” Douse said, talking about the rise in players after the release of official mod support in Baldur’s Gate 3’s Patch 7.
Growing Player Base and Impressive Numbers
The role-playing game inspired by Dungeons & Dragons, which came out in August 2023, has seen a 3% rise in daily peak players and a 61% jump in Steam Deck users compared to last year. This growth is impressive for a game that mainly focuses on single-player.
Baldur’s Gate 3 does have cooperative multiplayer, but it is not the type of game that gets regular new content to keep player numbers growing. Even though Larian has added updates with new features and fixes, the game has not had any DLC, which often brings in new players and encourages old ones to return.
Instead, mods have become the key reason the game continues to thrive. Of course, this success also reflects the high quality of Baldur’s Gate 3 itself. In related news, Baldur’s Gate 3 mods recently hit 1 million installs within 24 hours of the official mod support launch.
