Battleborn Will Only Receive One More Major Update

Battleborn to enter maintenance mode.

I actually liked Battleborn, and It’s going to be sad to see the game fade away. Still, it’s hard to blame Gearbox for putting the title into maintenance mode, particularly since it never really managed to shine when compared to similar titles. Battleborn has only been out for about two years, maybe less, and after its upcoming Fall Update, the game will only be maintained by a small crew. The servers will remain online for the “foreseeable future,” though, but players shouldn’t expect any more content patches. Battleborn Creative Director Randy Varnell shared the news via the Gearbox blog.

Why would Gearbox do this?

While nothing has been confirmed at the time of writing, it’s hard not to think about Borderlands 3. After all, Varnell did mention that he is moving on to an unnamed (but highly anticipated) Gearbox title. At the 2016 PAX West Panel, CEO Randy Pitchford confirmed that the team is “working hard on some stuff,” but Borderlands 3 is a subject for another time. Overwatch completely eclipsing Battleborn is definitely relevant, however. When it came out on May 3, 2016, Battleborn enjoyed positive feedback, and the players were coming in. Just a few weeks later, Overwatch came out, and the game started to lose player base quickly.

Those of you who intend to keep playing this game should know what to expect from the Fall Update. The patch will bring news skins, new Finisher Boosts, Taunts, title art improvements, and gameplay tweaks. The skins pack will also include some Borderlands-themed pieces, which sounds nice. Finally, the update will make some balancing changes, in an effort to perfect the gameplay once and for all.

Will you miss playing Battleborn, or is this kind of game just not your particular cup of tea?
