I was once a huge fan of the Battlefield franchise, but I have to admit that the more recent releases have not particularly impressed me that much. Admittedly though, when EA basically said ‘if you don’t like it, don’t buy it’, I was more than happy to oblige those sentiments and bought Call of Duty Modern Warfare instead. And I should note, I’ve never once felt any pangs of remorse about that decision.
I am, however, optimistic that one day this once great gaming series might get back in touch with the roots of what made it such an amazing game in the first place. And with Battlefield 6 seemingly set for release before the end of the year, where there’s hope, there’s life! – In something that may or may not be received by the community, however, following a report via PCGamesN, there are rumors afoot that aspects of Battlefield 6 might be made ‘free to play’ and we all know what that probably means…
So, if there is to be some sort of ‘free’ version of Battlefield 6, then we already have a pretty solid idea as to what they will be. In a nutshell, we’re almost certainly going to get a Battle Royale game looking to emulate or potentially steal (presuming it’s actually any good) some of the success away from Warzone.
Will it work though? Well… That entirely depends on one major key factor. Namely, whether EA chooses to completely bugger it up or not!
Let’s face it, EA absolutely loves gouging its community with as many microtransactions and loot boxes as possible. As such, while a free version of their own battle royale game set within Battlefield 6 could be a huge success, it will ultimate fail with the community if EA introduces ‘pay to win’ mechanics. And, quite frankly, can you honestly say you don’t think this is a possibility?…
Let us, however, remain positive for the moment and hope that after several lacklustre titles from the franchise, things will get back on track with this upcoming release!
