Recently, the world was treated to both the launch of Battlefield V from EA, as well as the RTX series of graphics cards from Nvidia. The two are very interesting, as RTX introduced the first commercial gamer GPUs that work with the latest DirectX RT update. Of course, that means that games can use more realistic rendering techniques for lighting, reflections, shadows, and more. Right now, AMD doesn’t have DXR compatible cards on the hardware side of things for consumers, although we expect that to change in the new year. The Nvidia RTX cards, however, are finally able to enjoy the only DXR compatible game on the market at this time, Battlefield V!
The performance of Battlefield V with the new RTX cards was superb, at least, it was good with RTX turned off. Check out our most recent GPU review, and you’ll see most cards run this game very well indeed; even at high resolutions. However, as you can see in our DXR performance feature from a couple of weeks ago, RTX on meant slashing frame rates practically in half. Overall the end results were as exciting as a wet sponge.
However, the latest updates from Nvidia with their new drivers promised big improvements. Furthermore, Battlefield V’s update promised further big improvements. Put the two updates together and Nvidia and DICE claim around 50% performance improvements. Could that be true? THAT much improvement from lacklustre results in just two weeks? Well, that’s what I’m here to find out. Not to be BuzzFeed, but the results may actually blow your mind, especially number 4.
