Beijing may be a great city for many things but the air is a little less than desirable for many. With many screens and sensors reading data all around the city to alert people about the air but it looks like technology may again be coming to the rescue as the city looks to get air purifiers to help with the smog.
Daan Roosegaarde works with machines that are less than classic in their design, using everything from solar-sensitive plants to light-emitting plankton. Smart City designers is a company hoping to bring together technology and cities and is looking to use technology to help the environment in cities.
“Big data is important, but things can go wrong if we only focus on technology and forget to connect with people and to connect people with their environment”, said Mr. Roosegaarde whose company are the creators behind the Smog Free Tower, the world’s first outdoor air purifier.
At 23 feet tall the chrome-lattice design uses ionization technology to suck up smog before filtering and pumping out slightly cleaner air. The most recent statistics floating around is that the purifiers could clean up to 70 to 80% of impurities in the air in just 36 hours in an area around the size of a football stadium.
Being able to clean up the air where many others have failed the new towers could help not only Bejing but cities all over the world.
