Belgian Student Builds Record-Breaking Giant Game Boy

While we await the possibility of Nintendo reviving every Nineties kid’s favourite handheld*, a Belgian student is thinking bigger. Indeed: much, much bigger. Brussels-based engineering student Ilhan Ünal built a gigantic version of Nintendo’s Game Boy handheld console. So gigantic, in fact, that it’s record-breaker. The Game Boy XXL, as Ünal dubbed his creation, will feature in the Gaming Edition of next year’s Guinness World Records.

Giant Game Boy

Ünal’s oversized console is fully functional – using a Raspberry Pi and a 19-inch monitor – though challenging to control. The Game Boy XXL measures 1.01 metres tall, 0.62 metres wide, and 0.2 metres deep. In addition, it is around 6.75-times the size of a normal Game Boy and has a volume of 120 litres.

Speaking to Guinness World Records, Ünal says:

“The Game Boy was a huge part of many people’s childhoods, including my own. I was obsessed with my Game Boy as a kid, so I wanted to create something that would put a smile on little Ilhan’s face, and hopefully on the face of anyone who is a big kid at heart.”

Record-Breaking

Stephen Daultrey, Editor of the Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition, said:

“This giant Game Boy is a fantastic example of tech-nostalgia at its very best, leaving most other consoles and gadgets quite literally in the shade.

The Gamer’s Edition this year is a true celebration of the very latest record-breaking in the world of videogaming, a world which has changed a lot since the Game Boy was first launched in 1989. There is always room for a little (or big!) nostalgia in amongst the innovation and evolution for which gaming is renowned.”

* OK, I see you two Game Gear fans at the back
