Bill Gates Buys Land with Plan to Build a Smart City

Bill Gates buys land in a barren Arizona desert to build a ‘smart city’

Having so much money that you don’t know what to do with it. It must be a nice problem. Definitely, one that I don’t have. Microsofts Founder Bill Gates likely does have this problem. He does, however, often decide to put it to good use.

One of his more recent purchases has been for a large patch of barren desert in Arizona. The purpose of which is to build the worsts first ‘smart city’.

This wouldn’t be the most surprising thing we’ve heard from Bill Gates this year. For example, we recently announced that in one area of his life, he had given in to a competitive brand.

Having purchased 25,000 acres of land just 45 miles west of Phoenix, Bill Gates plans to build the most technologically advanced city the world has ever seen. To put this into context, that is roughly the size of the UK city of, Coventry. As this point, you can feel free to put your comparison jokes in the comments.

Hopefully, Bill Gates’ vision of a city for the future isn’t based on Sim City.

What are the plans?

Bill Gates has partnered with a group of investors called the ‘Belmont Group’ reports CNET.

In a statement, the group has said: “Belmont will create a forward-thinking community with a communication and infrastructure spine that embraces cutting-edge technology, designed around high-speed digital networks, data centres, new manufacturing technologies and distribution models, autonomous vehicles and autonomous logistics hubs.”

At the moment, the potential is a lot of hyperbole, but what could be done could potentially set the template for all future city design. Once completed the group would expect 80,000 houses with nearly 4,000 acres allocated for office, commercial and retail developments. It all sounds like Sim City.

Bill Gates might only have one regret about Windows, but let’s hope that he doesn’t end up regretting this.
