Bing’s #1 Search Engine Request Revealed – It’s ‘Google’ (Ouch!)

Despite coming as effectively the default search engine for both Windows and the Edge internet browser, I don’t think it would be unfair to say that very few people actually use ‘Bing’. With an estimated market share of just 2.71%, despite the best efforts of Microsoft to represent it as a solid alternative to Google, the bottom line is that people don’t use it because, quite bluntly, it’s a bit crap!

In something that rather embarrassingly highlights this fact, however, following a report via Kotaku, it has been revealed that the most searched for word on the ‘Bing’ search engine is, in fact, ‘Google’… Oof!

Bing Users Mostly Search For… Google!

Google is currently in the middle of a legal tussle with the European Union after a ruling in 2018 fined the tech giant $5BN for allegedly operating the platform to crush all competition and, by all intents and purposes, create itself a monopoly. As part of their appeal, Google has said that rather than attempting to deliberately squash their opposition, people use their search engine because, quite simply, they like it.

And in a rather awkward bit of evidence to back this up, Google has presented data that on arguably the biggest alternative platform ‘Bing’, ‘Google’ is the most common search request made by users.

Now, is this surprising? No, of course not. This is, however, the tech equivalent of seeing a friend with a huge pimple on their nose and deciding to, rather vocally, point it out for the whole world to see. We all know it’s there, but you don’t mention anything largely out of politeness!

What Do We Think?

Despite what you might think of Google as a company, it’s hard to deny that their search engine is probably the best one currently available online. I mean, let’s be honest, the vast majority of you reading this probably use it as your ‘go-to’ platform for a quick generic hunt of the internet. – So, while clearly an exceptionally awkward piece of evidence coming at Microsoft’s expense, I think it would be difficult to argue that this is not a compelling piece of evidence. Not that Google may or may not have created a monopoly for itself, but simply one that highlights that, by and large, people think that their search engine is a good one.
