BIOSTAR Enters the SSD Market with G300 Drive

SSDs have a huge impact on your system performance and while NVMe drives are the future, most people still use traditional SATA3 2.5-inch drives due to the price, availability, and compatibility with their systems. The parts to make SSDs are widely available and now another player wants a bite of the cake which is the SSD market. BIOSTAR have been revamping their lineup and focusing more on enthusiasts and gamers and can now provide those people with not just motherboards and graphics cards, but storage drives as well.

The first entry into this market is called the G300 and it comes in three different capacity versions: 120GB, 240GB, and 480GB. The drive is based around the Silicon Motion SMI2256 controller and paired with 1MB cache per 1GB capacity, not counting over provisioning.

The G300 is rated for a performance up to 550MB/s reading and 480MB/s writing. While the NAND type hasn’t been specified in the initial release, we can more or less assume that it’s TLC NAND of some sort.

On the outside, the G300 is a simplistic designed black drive housed in an aluminium enclosure which is something that should help the drive stay cool in hotter environments and thereby keep up its performance. The PCB is a 6-layer one which again helps the drive to perform optimally in harsher environments. No need to worry about your drive throttling just because you run long gaming session with a hot system.

BIOSTAR also added four power management chips from Texas Instruments that should provide the drive with a longer lifetime and durability as well as reliability.

The BIOSTAR G300 drive is backed by a 3-year warranty and comes at a budget-friendly price around $0.30 per GB capacity.
