Pricing
Biostar is currently working on the retail channel and this SSD will be available on the market very soon. In the meantime, while I can’t provide any link to an actual shop where you can purchase it yet, I got the suggested retail price which is $66 USD for this 240GB model. The smaller 120GB comes with a $44 USD MSRP and the larger 480GB comes with a $140 USD MSRP. That makes a price per GB of just 0.275 for the drive that I tested today.
Conclusion
The Biostar G300 is an impressive little drive, especially for a first entry into this highly competitive storage market and the drive seems to hit just the spot it was aiming for. We saw a drive that topped out the charts among the competition in the benchmark it should – PCMark. Biostar markets this drive as a gamer drive and while I usually don’t put much faith in the ‘gamer’ brand, in this case, it’s really true. Many times, a product will be labeled as gamer product in order to speak to a particular crowd, but doesn’t offer anything that really justifies it. For the Biostar G300 that is differently and we saw it clearly beating the rest and taking the top spot in the game benchmarks. While it didn’t top out in other charts, it still did pretty well there too.
The design of the drive is simple but beautiful. The sleek black exterior with just a Biostar logo on the top will look great in any system and the build quality should ensure a smooth performance even when your system might run hot from very long gaming sessions where you GPU has to work overtime and thereby creates a lot of heat. The insides are simple too, but equally well built with the 6-layered PCB and additional TI power control chips.
It is indeed a very nice first entry from Biostar in this market and I for one hope to see a lot more storage drives from then in the future. And while Biostar isn’t a company you think of straight away when you think of storage, that might very well change in the near future.
Pros
- Good gaming performance
- Fair pricing
- Beautiful simplistic design
- 6-layered PCB
Cons
- Availability
- No additional bundle value
