Well, it’s certainly been a bit of a rollercoaster in terms of the development of the Bloodhound SSC throughout the latter part of 2018. For those of you who have absolutely no idea what I’m talking about, for around 2 years now, a brand new car has been looking not just to set a new land-speed record but to smash it completely!
With successful preliminary testing, the project did, however, hit a major problem a couple months ago. Namely, that it had run out of money. After failing to find an investor, it was announced last week that the project itself had seemingly been scrapped. This was exceptionally disappointing as the car had not even undertaken 1 speed run attempt.
In a report via The Independent, we do have some great news! An investor has been found who will put in enough money to ensure the vehicle will at least have 1 attempt at the land speed record.
Looking to achieve speeds in excess of 1,000mph (smashing the current record by about 250mph) the British backed project provides a combination of a Jaguar V8 engine and a Rolls Royce rocket to achieve the incredible speeds. To date though, the vehicle only undertook one test run in which it achieved just over 200mph. This, it should be noted, wasn’t a full-blown test run.
Following this new investor though, it seems that it will, finally, undertake 1 full-blown run.
Originally, the rocket was scheduled to undertake the speed attempt in South Africa at some point in 2019. With this new investment, it’s hard to know whether this date will be kept, but to ensure a run is made before this new money runs out, 2019 seems likely again.
At the very least though, it’s good news! The run is back on!
