Revolution Software has just revealed that the truly iconic point-and-click adventure game Brokzen Sword is getting a 4K remaster! The first Broken Sword game had me pulling my hair out as a teenager, as it’s both an exciting story and often frustrating puzzler, but still by far one of the best examples of the genre. The upgraded release will be called Broken Sword – Shadow of the Templars: Reforged, and while there was a poor remaster around 12 years ago, I have high hopes that it’ll be done correctly this time around.
Even more so, I’m hoping this release is done well and sells well, as it may then lead to a remaster of the even better Broken Sword 2, and a new generation of gamers will have to put up with that goddamn goat puzzle… if you know, you know.
Not only that, but they’ve also revealed the next entry in the franchise, which will be called Broken Sword – Parzival’s Stone. I must admit I’m a little behind on the series at this point, but hey, it sounds like I’ll have a good excuse to replay them soon enough. It’s just more surprising that this game was rumoured around eight years ago now!
Broken Sword – Shadow of the Templars: Reforged looks set to release early in 2024. Giving the classic game a huge resolution boost. Meanwhile, Broken Sword – Parzival’s Stone uses a “super 2D” approach, with hand-drawn backgrounds and 3D geometry overlaid, you can see what that looks like in the trailer below.
Honestly though, don’t care too much for the new game regardless, at least not yet, but the adventures of George and Nico in the original will always have a place in my heart. Roll on 2024, when we’ll hopefully be able to play it again!
