It looks like The Terminator is not the only 80s action franchise film series that is going to get a part six, Die Hard will as well. Director Len Wiseman just confirmed that Bruce Willis will be reprising his role as John McClane for the next movie. It is unlike the previous five films however, as it will feature a parallel storyline covering the rookie years of officer McClane.
Although Bruce Willis is onboard, the search for an actor who could play his younger self is still going on. According to Wiseman himself, these are “very big shoes to fill”. The very first Die Hard movie set during the Nakatomi Plaza siege was in 1988. This latest movie however will have a parallel story set in 1979. Although Wiseman did not fill in much detail about the plot, it most likely involves a villain from McClane’s past coming back to haunt him 40 years later.
The working title for the film on imdb is currently called “Die Hard: Year One”. The last time John McClane was on the big screen was for 2013’s A Good Day to Die Hard. Set in Russia, the movie had McClane team up with his son Jack McClane played by Jai Courtney. It was universally panned by critics and fans alike, getting a 14% RottenTomatoes score and only 40% audience approval. The upcoming movie marks Len Wiseman’s return to the franchise after 2007’s Live Free or Die Hard. That movie is rated fresh at RottenTomatoes with 82% critical approval and 86% audience approval.
