Bungie Announces Major Layoffs Amid Financial Struggles and Sony Integration

Bungie, the developer behind Destiny 2, has announced significant layoffs affecting 220 employees. This move is part of a larger strategy to address financial difficulties and deepen integration with Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE). Despite the recent success of The Final Shape expansion, Bungie faces rising development costs and economic pressures.
The layoffs will impact various levels within the company, including executive and senior leadership roles. Pete Parsons, Bungie’s studio head, stated that the focus will now be on supporting Destiny 2 and developing the new extraction shooter Marathon. The decision comes after an earlier round of layoffs in October 2023, which saw around 100 developers let go.
Integration with Sony
As part of the restructuring, 155 roles will be integrated into Sony Interactive Entertainment over the next few quarters. Additionally, an unannounced action game set in a science-fantasy universe will be handed over to a new studio under the PlayStation Studios banner. This new studio will develop the game, aligning Bungie’s projects more closely with Sony’s vision.
While Destiny 2 and Marathon are largely unaffected by these changes, the layoffs highlight the challenges Bungie faces in maintaining its operations and achieving profitability.
