Call of Duty is Going Back to its Roots In 2017

The ongoing franchise Call of Duty is going back to its roots in 2017, and whilst for those who enjoy the series this will be good news, there is an equal amount of people preparing their “copy/paste” internet arguments.

Call of Duty has had more than it’s fair share of criticism, often being accused of releasing the exact same game, with a different look year after year, and some people just don’t understand why people still buy it, much like Fifa, and arguably every franchise that exists. However, it’s always Call of Duty that seems to pick up most, if not all, or the criticism.

The current cycle for Call of Duty is 3 yearly, between 3 developers. The 2015 game, Black Ops 3, was developed by Treyarch, whilst Infinite Warfare in 2016 was developed by Infinity Ward.

The 2017 title therefore goes back to Sledgehammer, and they are taking the game back to it’s more traditional roots after a mixed reception of their more futuristic titles.

With Battlefield taking the crown during the last round of releases, Activision are hoping a trip back to it’s more successful period may provide the sales boost it’s after. Recently they’d announced that 2016 revenue was up on the previous year, however, it seems they aren’t happy with the results.

Infinite Warfare was poorly received and Activision saw potential revenue slip away, although their revenue did increase, they obviously missed out on a large amount.

Nothing more is known about the next Call of Duty, but as their games are usually launched early November, it’s safe to say we’ll see more details soon, as testing and betas get underway. We can only hope that it is a large enough departure from the usual that it doesn’t feel like yet another re-release of an existing title.
