Camera manufacturer Canon just announced the world’s first flash with AI built-in. The new Speedlite 470EX-AI has the innovative Auto Intelligent Bounce function which sets the optimal bounce angle for natural, properly illuminated results indoors.
It completely removes the guess work out and lets photographers capture important moments more rapidly. This is ideal for those taking photos of live events such as weddings for example. In fact it can be useful for both beginners and enthusiasts alike.
Obviously, it is not entirely for professionals who would still rely on their compositional skills. However, the advancement is useful for many other photographers.
The new AI Bounce technology inside the Speedlite 470EX-AI works by measuring the distance between the flash and the subject. It then measures the distance between the flash and the ceiling to determine the optimal bounce angle.
The head of the external flash tilts, rotates and moves to the correct position before the shot is taken. Moreover, the feature can remember the proper bounce angle when switching between portrait and landscape orientations as well.
Other than the AI Bounce feature, it has a focal length coverage range of 24mm to 105mm, and has a maximum reach of 77 feet in normal mode. It requires four AA batteries like other Speedlite flashes, and achieves a minimum recycle time of 0.1 to 3.5 seconds when using NiMH batteries.
The camera flash has an MSRP of $399 USD, with a release date scheduled for April 2018.
