Even though some reports state that Apple is pushing back its ambitions to build a self-driving car in the near future, it looks like the company is actually quite invested in its CarPlay software, which is basically a stripped back version of iOS designed specifically for automobile use. Sources indicate that the software in question is now available on more than 200 vehicles, including the likes of Audi, Volkswagen, Mitsubishi, and Honda. We’re talking about cars that were already on the market, but there are several 2017 models included on the list as well. CarPlay is regarded as a direct competitor to Google’s own car OS, Android Auto, but it’s not exactly clear who has the lead as far as covered models are concerned.
We do know that Android Auto was scheduled to become available on more than 40 models from 2016 this October, including Fiat Chrysler cars, some BMWs, Toyota and Lexus vehicles. The good news is that both software options will become for people who don’t plan to buy a brand new car in 2017, all thanks to various media receivers released by companies such as Sony. CarPlay is being advertised as “the ultimate copilot,” as it is able to provide directions, make calls, control music and take care of the user’s messages.
