The untimely passing of Carrie Fisher left a hole in many Star Wars fans’ heart and in the Star Wars storyline as well since she has signed up to play the iconic Princess Leia Organa up until Episode IX which is scheduled for release in 2019. Even though her likeness was captured in CG form in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, appearing as a young Leia from the original trilogy, LucasFilms swore to never use a digital recreation of her in future Star Wars movies. Her brother Todd however, has revealed that Disney still wants to incorporate Fisher into Star Wars Episode IX.
Fisher has finished filming her scenes for Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, scheduled for release on December 2017, before she passed but Episode IX is still more than two years away from release so there are some issues to be worked out there. Disney claims that they can use existing footage of the character Leia and incorporate it into the movies. Carrie’s brother Todd and daughter Billie Lourd have granted permission to Disney to continue using her likeness and the footage. Just because they promised not to use a digital recreation of Carrie Fisher in the Star Wars movies, it does not mean they cannot digitally repaint the background to incorporate her in a different scene, which is most likely what they are going to do so as to keep their promise.
