Custom RTX 2080 Ti graphics cards are being sold featuring doubled up memory from the original 11GB up to 22GB making it a more viable choice for the AI boom.
22GB RTX 2080 Ti
As shared by TomsHardware, Chinese workshops are repurposing old 2080 Ti GPUs, specifically MSI models, into larger 22GB models presumably in an effort to get around the current US export restrictions which block NVIDIA from selling its dedicated AI acceleration GPUs and the RTX 4090. Photos were shared of these cards by I_Leak_VN from a listing on goofish.
Photos on the platform from someone by the name of Aisawk show off these cards as well as the apparent original Samsung GDDR6 chips used in the modification. Supposedly the modified cards won’t face any driver issues as well and didn’t require any vBIOS modifications either. Apparently the seller also offers an upgrade service for those who already own an RTX 2080 Ti.
It’s interesting to see the lengths people go to just to get some extra VRAM for their GPU and to get involved with the AI craze. This isn’t anything new either as it has been done several times in the past including a 20GB RTX 3080 and 16GB RTX 3070. Interestingly this card also found its way outside of China in a listing from customgpu_official based in Palo Alto California. The listing showed the same MSI Aero 22GB 2080 Ti alongside a price tag of $499.
