A little while ago, we reported on a series of rumors concerning CD Projekt RED and the possibility of a hostile takeover, and the rumors were based on a translated document that showed an extraordinary meeting of shareholders scheduled for November 29. During this meeting, the company’s shareholders would tackle a series of major subjects, one of them being a vote to change the company’s statute by applying restrictions on the voting ability of shareholders owning 20% or more of the company’s shares. These restrictions would only be lifted if the shareholders in question would buy all the remaining shares for a set price thus exceeding 50% of the shares.
Now, given the fact that CD Projekt RED is the creator of The Witcher games, which are arguably some of the best RPG’s ever made, a lot of fans have expressed their concerns regarding a possible hostile takeover by companies such as EA. Fortunately, the company decided to put the rumors to rest:
“As for the rumor, it emerged after the Board suggested introducing a voting cap during the upcoming shareholder meeting. However, the proposal is not a reaction to any current events affecting CD PROJEKT. Rather, it is meant as insurance against future hypothetical scenarios which may never materialize. We wish to safeguard the interests of minority shareholders in a hypothetical case where a major shareholder emerges professing a business and strategic vision which conflicts with ours.”
It looks like they are simply taking necessary precautions regarding hypothetical events, which is definitely a good idea if you ask me. CD Projekt RED’s future projects include Cyberpunk 2077 and Gwent, which is currently in closed beta.
