In the upcoming second round of the current-gen console wars – set to be fought between Sony’s Neo 4K PS4 and Microsoft’s Project Scorpio Xbox One upgrade – most of the buzz surrounds Project Scorpio, which is reported to have 6 TFLOPs of computing power behind it, and talk suggests that output will put the console on par with current gaming PCs.
Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz, Principal Narrative Designer at CD Projekt RED, thinks that had Project Scorpio existed when The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt launched, that the RPG could have looked even better than on PC.
“For sure [the Scorpio] will have better looking games,” Tomaszkiewicz told GamingBolt. “If this was available when we were working on Wild Hunt I would expect similar quality that we have on PC right now or even better maybe.”
However, Tomaszkiewicz adds that, since the evolution of PC technology operates at a faster speed than consoles, given that hardware can be easily swapped out, that it wouldn’t be long until Project Scorpio is usurped.
“This is my personal opinion: I don’t know that much about it. I think PCs are growing and developing super fast,” he added. “New graphic cards are being released very often and more often than the new consoles being released. So I think it will put Scorpio on par with the PC is that we have at that point. But I think PC is growing so fast that it’ll outpace [Scorpio].”
Though, the rumoured power of Project Scorpio begs the question: if the forthcoming console boasts such a hardware upgrade on other Xbox One models – seemingly greater than just a 4K alternative – why limit it to running the same software? Why not make Project Scorpio its own unique console?
