How Much Does it Cost?

While we haven’t been able to confirm exact UK pricing at the time of this review, we do see that the Chieftronic PowerUp GPX-850FC is available for sale for something in the region of £109.99/$124.99 (converted from Euros). So in terms of comparative value, this power supply does sit somewhere in the middle of the expected price range.

Admittedly, it would’ve been nicer to see this fall below £100, but when you consider the features and performance, it’s hard to argue with the cost! – As we noted right at the beginning of this review, you do tend to get what you pay for!

Performance

Aside from something of a mildly curious incident thrown up in our ripple results (that showed figures increasing at mid-load), the Chieftronic PowerUp GPX-850FC performed fantastically throughout all of our various tests. The results clearly demonstrated that the Chieftronic PowerUp GPX-850FC has high-levels of efficiency, a solid PFC, good voltage regulation, and a near-silent level of performance.

Even taking that ripple result into consideration, it’s honestly hard to find anything to fault with the Chieftronic PowerUp GPX-850FC. It does everything you would want, need, or wish! – That Chieftec technology has clearly been put to good use!

Practicality & Functionality

With it’s fully modular design and low (if not silent) noise output, the Chieftronic PowerUp GPX-850FC certainly has you covered in both a practical and functional sense. More so, with it’s highly distinctive aesthetic, it achieves something very difficult for power supplies. Namely, looking good when installed in a system.

The only gripe I could make is that the cable length isn’t overly generous. Ideally, I’d have preferred them to be just an inch or two longer. Then again, there are other things I might potentially wish that for that are, technically speaking, still perfectly adequate.

Should I Buy One?

Unlike the bad old days (around 10-15 years ago) the market today is pretty well saturated with good quality power supplies. It does, therefore, beg the question as to whether the Chieftronic PowerUp GPX-850FC has what it takes to stand out from the pack.

Well, in terms of its performance and aesthetics, the Chieftronic PowerUp GPX-850FC is undoubtedly one of the best around or, at the very least, as good as its main rivals. If there was a criticism to be made, however, it would likely simply have to boil down to the fact that its price tag puts it slap-bang in the middle of most of its ‘competition’. Something potentially adding to some moderate concern as to why, particularly in regards to the main capacitor, a more premium choice of component wasn’t made.

Putting that to one side, however, is it a good power supply? – In a nutshell? – Yes! – Whether it will be a success on the market though will ultimately boil down to consumers like you making savvy decisions!
