Google’s Chrome browser is on track to overtake Mozilla’s Firefox browser as the second most popular browser to Internet Explorer according to latest projections. The analytics company StatCounter has used past trends along with current rates of change to show that it is likely Chrome will take second place in the browser market. As you can see from the graph above Chrome is making substantial progress and Firefox is suffering a rather nasty decline.
Chrome has already doubled its share in 2011 compared to 2010 growing a staggering 11 percentage points in the browser market while Chrome’s gain has been Internet Explorer and Firefox’s loss. If the same trends continue Chrome will have overtaken Firefox by the end of the year. But even if that occurs there is still a rather large distance for Chrome to close between Internet Explorer. Another analytics company Net Applications suggest Chrome is too far behind to overtake Firefox by the end of the year but it suggests the overtake will take place in mid 2012: according to Net Applications Chrome is currently 8% behind Firefox not the 3% that Stat Counter suggest. Whatever does actually happen it is clear that Chrome is gaining popularity fast and unless Firefox can turn this around Chrome will soon be in second place.
