On the Super Nintendo, Chrono Trigger was one of the systems defining games. Many consider it to be one of the best games of all times and it certainly stands shoulder to shoulder with other better know games such as Super Mario World or Zelda: A Link to the Past.
Fans may, therefore, be delighted to hear that Square Enix has released a PC version of the game, available to download and play on Steam. That being said, not all of the fans are too happy about it.
In the release, Square Enix has called the game the ‘definitive edition’. The release includes updated graphics, autosaving and controller support.
In a report via DSOGaming, the list of the release is as follows:
Despite this release, however, some have taken to Twitter with some very harsh criticisms.
Comparing the game to someones first attempt at RPG maker is harsh, but I can see what the guy is getting at. Some of the menu’s do look very… amateurish.
There is, of course, doing to be a number of people who do not like it for similar reasons that they didn’t like the recent Secret of Mana remaster. It’s not quite retro and it’s certainly not new and because of that, it’s not really pleasing anyone. It, may, however, go beyond that.
On the Steam page, the reviews are in and they are ‘mostly negative’. Most users compare the game to a bad port of the mobile version which they still feel is superior. One user, dubbed ‘Cap’n Crazy’ said: “Look, I’m sorry. This is probably my favorite RPG ever, and had it not been for the godawful sprite hack, this would have been a great way to play it. I can’t recommend it until somebody throws together a replacement for the sprites- until then I recommend the DS version as the superior version of the game.”
It would, therefore, seem that another classic has been massacred. Spoiled for the next generation and that is a sincere pity.
