CISPA Is Back, Open Internet At Risk Once Again!

C.I.S.P.A. Also known as H.R. 624: Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act. The United States government is always trying to break down legal barriers that are in place for the protection of the people. Over the past few years multiple bills have come to light in an effort to give the government more access to our information, and allow them to take away our privacy. Though we have no real privacy when we use the internet, this would give the government more access.

“The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.” The Fourth Amendment of the United States Constitution

If you are like me, you want a free and open internet, where you can look up and view anything and everything your heart desires. You don’t want your Internet Service Provider to be telling you that you have been denied access to a website because it either features something that the government or your ISP doesn’t want you to view. The common idea behind these bills is not that it is online censorship, it is claimed it is to prevent terrorism.

As we search the net looking for more information we find that, zdnet.com has let us know what it would mean for us if CISPA were to pass. The Electronic Frontier Foundation has also explained to us “What it is and Why it’s Still Dangerous”. There is an extensive Wikipedia article telling us about what it is. Many different companies and organizations are against CISPA even the President’s senior advisor would recommend the President veto the bill.

If you have ever read George Orwell’s 1984 you would know the fear of giving “Big Brother” more power. If we allow this bill to pass we will lose even more privacy, allowing the monitoring of our, emails, texts, searches, etc. I was reading an article a while back about how our ISP’s will start giving us six strokes for downloading materials that are copywritten. A program called the “Copyright Alert System” essentially works the same way, taking away your privacy. If you’re interested in reading the bill, you can find the full bill on the Official GOP website.

I am not going to tell you how or what you should think about this topic, in reality I think if you are interested in reading more about this topic you can check the links I have provided above, in the article. You may or may not be interested in the topic. You may also be interested in what is going on in the world today. I want you to have access to these materials. I hope that you have found this article helpful in your research of this huge debatable topic.  As always, feel free to give me your thoughts in the comments below.
