I love Cities: Skylines, it’s my go-to game when I can’t decide what else to play, and I always end up playing way longer than I should and trying to copy Imperator builds from YouTube, even if mine look like a child built them… it’s a lot of fun to try. There have been more DLC than I can be arsed to list for the game, and the modding scene is absolutely awesome too, but it seems it’s time to move on. Eight years after the original release, Cities: Skylines is getting a proper sequel.
Creatively named Cities: Skylines II, since I’m guessing Cities Skylines: Electric Boogaloo was taken, the new game is set to launch on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, and it’s coming this year! While some sequels have been a bit hit and miss lately, such as the early access Kerbal Space Program, which ditched the original development team, Skylines II is coming from Colossal Order and Paradox Interactive, so I have very high hopes for it. Especially given the original pretty much stomped over what little was left of the Sim City market.
The new game is set to feature a more advanced and expansive toolset and mechanics, which isn’t surprising given how far mods pushed the original. However, the game will support more advanced modding capabilities too, so who knows where the community will take things now. From small villages to metropolises, it’s all going to be there for you to create and manage.
Colossal Order says Cities: Skylines II has “fully-realized transport and economy systems, a wealth of construction and customization options, and advanced modding capabilities.” The original Cities: Skylines will celebrate its eighth birthday on March 10th and Colossal Order promises more information about the sequel over the coming months.
Well, colour me interested, as the first one was and still is utterly fantastic, so I’m eager to see how they could make it better!
