The beloved classic StarCraft title is approaching its 20th anniversary since it was released back in 1998. The original game utilised sprites since it was published before the era of widespread 3D gaming, so it does not translate very well to modern HD and 4K screens but according to rumours coming out of Korea, fans might be in for a surprise before the end of the year. Seoul Sports reports that according to their inside sources, a modern remaster of the classic StarCraft game is in the works and might actually be due before the end of 2017. We reported several months ago of this possibility, but as the release is approaching, this is showing to be accurate.
The classic StarCraft title is still very popular in Korea, China and other countries and the revival is expected to give a further boost to Blizzard’s e-Sports brand which is already quite strong with the success of Overwatch. The expected release date of the classic StarCraft remaster is sometime around May to June since according to industry sources, Blizzard is setting up a big event around that date so the announcement might be surrounding this topic. Aside from providing a high-definition update, the remaster also expects a faithful game mechanics adaptation and a revamp of Battle.net.
During the first year of its release alone, StarCraft 1 sold over 1.5 million copies worldwide and earned many awards. It eventually sold over 9.5 million copies worldwide, 4.5 million of which was sold in South Korea.
