CM Storm are known for their great performing products at decent prices. In the past we’ve given several awards away for performance and value, so we never doubt any products they send us. The Recon is the first ambi mouse we’ve seen from them, which now opens up their products to left handed gamers (which there are a lot of apparently). The additional accessory, the Skorpion also follows CM Storm’s objectives by providing a useful product that in some cases, will result in less deaths from accidental cable snagging.
The Recon has many useful features such as the side buttons and on the fly DPI/profile switching, on top of a comfortable grip (if you use the palm grip) and fairly decent performance in terms of movement, accuracy and sensitivity. The mouse comes in with an RRP of around £34 which is incredibly well priced and makes it a much cheaper alternative to Roccat and Razer’s ambi mouse offerings. We also liked how simple and intuitive the software was to use, although an internet connection is required at first (who doesn’t have the internet anyway?).
There were a few issues that we discovered however. The DPI range is good but if you really want performance you will be wanting a laser sensor and not optical. The Recon also has a slightly cheap, plasticy feel to it – especially with a non-braided cable, which whilst it didn’t bother us, it might not bode well for other users. CM Storm do state that this mouse is best suited to a palm grip and they are spot on, it just doesn’t feel right with a claw so you either get used to it, or get another mouse. We do love side buttons on our mice, but the Recon being designed for both hands, does mean that the buttons on the opposite side to your thumb will go unused – which is a bit of a waste.
The Skorpion mouse bungee we also reviewed performed just as it should and it did it without fault. What more is there to say? For around £12 you can have a wired mouse feel like its wireless, albeit with a very limited range. We love our bungees and every true hardcore gamer should have one.
The main product we are reviewing is of course the mouse and overall we were very happy with the Recon. It had ample features and decent performance qualities that make it a decent budget mouse. It glided across all the surfaces we tested it on, whilst remaining precise and accurate. The Recon also looks great (especially if you like Razer mice) and would make a decent addition to any gamer’s arsenal. Sure it has some negative points like the palm grip only and plasticy feel, but at around £34 it is an absolute bargain, so for this reason we are awarding the CM Storm Recon Gaming mouse the:
