A security researcher has found Coldplay lyrics within Kingston SSD firmware.
Someone at Kingston clearly loves Coldplay as security researcher Nicholas Starke discovered the lyrics to Coldplay’s song ‘The Scientist’ within the SSD controller firmware of Kingston SSDs. Starke reached out to BleepingComputer to share his bizarre findings. The researcher analysed the firmware version SKC2000_S2681103 for the Kingston KC2000 M.2 SSD and discovered the lyrics within the drive and admitted that he’s never seen anything “quite like it”.
So the question to be asked is, why on earth are the lyrics to Coldplay’s The Scientist hidden within the SSD firmware? In my opinion, I think it’s some inside joke at Kingston or someone lost a bet as I don’t see any reason other than “it’ll be funny” which was said all too often at my last retail job. Maybe Kingston will let us know what it is but it will probably remain a mystery.
