It’s been a good year for PC gaming, and when it’s a good year for PC gaming, it’s a good year for Steam.
It’s certainly been an unusual one. For example, only in recent months the online gaming retailer officially stopped accepting Bitcoin as a currency. Something that certainly surprised many. We have also seen the insane craze that has been PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. The game which incidentally just became the best selling PC title of all time.
It is due to games such as a PUBG that Steam has again broken one of its own records. Back in November Steam broke their record by achieving over 17 million concurrent players online at a given point. While impressive at the time, we didn’t expect that record to stay in place forever. To be broken within a couple months by such a significant margin, however, was definitely not expected.
Steam, has, however, just smashed this record by achieving over 18,500,000 players.
In a report via PCGamesN, Steam just topped out at over 18 and a half million concurrent players. Now, as above, the advent of games such as PUBG is certainly a major factor in this, but it also shows just how far Steam has come in the last year.
Figures from January 2017 show that at the time the concurrent player record was around 14-14.5m players. Therefore, in the last year, the gaming platform has managed to find itself another 4 million players.
Now, of course, all of the sales and discounts you can find in PC gaming will certainly be a factor. At the same time, however, I doubt there are many that would have predicted that the record would have increased so significantly in such a short period.
