Animated Super Mario Bros. Heading to the Big Screen

A New Super Mario Bros. Movie

The last time an official Super Mario Bros. movie hit theaters was in 1993 and did not exactly turn out well. In fact, not only was it a critical failure, it was a box office failure as well. It only earned $20M domestically with a production budget of $48M. Moreover, it barely resembles anything from the game that fans love.

Which is why it is understandable that Nintendo has not pushed for another attempt at a movie. That is until now, as they are officially confirming that the news is true. Fans initially thought it is going to be a live action Zelda movie after The Wall Street Journal reported about it two months ago.

Live Action or Animated?

This time, they seem to be really giving it their all to produce a movie about their flagship character. Even creator Shigeru Miyamoto is on-board, perhaps to make sure it keeps to the spirit of the game. Alongside him is Illumination Pictures CEO Chris Meledandri. Illumination of course, is the company behind the massively successful ‘Despicable Me’ and ‘Minions‘ franchise.

The next movie is going to be fully 3D animated, just like Illumination Picture’s previous projects. Which is a fair move considering there aren’t exactly any fans clamoring for a live action adaptation. Besides, it will take much more effort and will distract too much from the story. Distribution rights will be handled by Universal pictures, with aims to make it a multi-picture franchise. No further details about the movie were revealed at this time.
