Cooler Master Tempest GP27Q Mini-LED Gaming Monitor Review

Recently, I brought you a review of the Cooler Master Tempest GP27Q Mini-LED Gaming monitor (here), by far one of the best, if not the actual best monitor I’ve ever tested. However, with its 4K panel, it wasn’t cheap, costing roughly £800… not exactly chump change for a 27″ monitor… but wow, it’s worth it. However, running games at 4K and high refresh rates isn’t easily achieved, so for many gamers, I think the GP27Q is the monitor that will prove the more popular of the two, it’s very similar with a few small feature changes, but most importantly it’s a 2K panel (2560×1440) and it’s about 300 quid cheaper at just £499.99.

Tempest GP27Q

The Tempest series are like a hotdog with everything on it, which is to say, they have a LOT of features. A WQHD resolution is plenty of pixels for a 27″ gaming monitor. However, the swift 165Hz refresh rate (my personal favourite refresh rate), an UltraFast IPS panel with 1<ms response times, and Adaptive Sync make this a serious contender for competitive gaming. However, extremely accurate colours in SDR and HDR modes, and a swanky backlight that has 576 individual zones means that it’s in a league of its own compared to most gaming monitor (which are usually edge-lit), giving it the brightness of a QLED with the black levels closer to an OLED.

  • MiniLED Panel – 576 local dimming zones
  • Peak Brightness – 1200 nits (HDR), 600 nits (SDR)
  • Fully Adjustable Overdrive + Dynamic Overdrive– in the OSD menu, users can customize the level of Overdrive using values from 0-100 for a more precise overdrive setting. There’s also a dynamic overdrive setting that automatically sets the overdrive based on the refresh rate.
  • Quantum Dot Layer – 1.07 billion (8-bit + FRC), 99% Adobe RGB, 98% DCI-P3
  • Color Calibration Delta E <2 – Delta E<2 for sRGB, Adobe RGB and DCI-P3.
  • UltraSpeed IPS Panel – Ultra-Fast response times, up to 0.5ms MPRT on GP27Q. MPRT is not available on GP27U. Response times of (up to) 1-2ms GtG on both.
  • FreeSync Premium Pro Certification – We are aiming to achieve FreeSync Premium Pro certification on both of our devices. The units have been sent to AMD already and we are waiting to hear back. As such, we’ve used the certification in our review guide, but officially we have not received it yet.
  • KVM Switch – Connect an extra device and use one set of peripherals to control both devices.
