Corsair debut their Neutron SSDs and buck the SSD trend

It has been a very long time in the making but finally Corsair have bucked the “Marvell or Sandforce” trend of the SSD market that has been with us for years. OCZ’s experimenting with the Indilinx controller turned out to be a Marvell “tweak and rebrand” effort.

So thankfully Corsair’s new line of SSDs have made that brave step towards a new controller. The Corsair Neutron SSDs are based off the LM87800 from Link_A_Media Devices (LAMD). This new controller helps the Corsair Neutron GTX series SSDs deliver 90K IOPS on both random read and write as well as 555MB/s read and 500MB/s write. The Corsair Neutron series SSDs will deliver slightly less performance with 90K random read IOPS and 85K random write IOPS plus 555MB/s read and 370MB/s write.

As a result of the performance difference the Neutron and Neutron GTX SSDs are price slightly different.

  •  Neutron Series 120 GB $119.99 USD
  • Neutron Series 240 GB $209.99 USD
  • Neutron Series GTX 120 GB $139.99 USD
  • Neutron Series GTX 240 GB $249.99 USD

As of late, the reviews for the new Neutron series SSDs have been very positive indeed – in fact the vast majority of SSDs on the market are left biting the dust of the new LM87800 controller.

Currently the range is limited to 120GB and 240GB models, but expect higher capacity 480GB models to arrive in late September.

What are your thoughts of the new SSD controller Corsair have gone with?
