The Corsair HS55 Wireless Core is available now from many major retailers. It launched this week, but stock is still rolling out, so you may not see it everywhere just yet. However, you should expect prices of around £99, which isn’t a bargain, but it’s certainly competitive with other similarly equipped wireless headsets. Plus, for all its tweaks and wireless abilities over the wired HS65, it’s still only around £20 more expensive, which is pretty decent value really. However, if you don’t care if it’s wired or wireless, I’d suggest getting the slightly cleaper and little more powerful HS65, but if you do want wireless, the HS55 is well worth it.
Corsair is one of the biggest names in the gaming business, and it’s easy to see why. This headset takes an existing design and makes a few minor tweaks to the aesthetics, all good ones too in my opinion. The cables are gone and you now get both low-latency 2.4 GHz wireless thanks to the USB dongle, or the Bluetooth connection. It means I can use it on my PC, PlayStation or even my mobile devices easily enough. Well, I suppose practically anything with Bluetooth is supported, of course. When it comes to the wireless performance, it’s not let me down yet. There’s no crackling or distorting, and the range was fine up to 20M but then I ran out of garden.
The acoustic performance is very good. I like a big more bass and mid range in my sound to give music a more full bodied sound. I like drums to thump, explosions to really rumble and thankfully, this headset doesn’t disapoint. The maximum volume is plenty loud, but not overly so that I felt my hearing was at risk. The stereo imaging is great too, helped further by the closed-back driver design and the PU-leather ear pads that help lock in the sound.
The build quality is good too, albeit, the headset feels very lightweight, which leads you to feeling like it is fragile. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case. The inner headband is metal, the back of the ear cups are metal, and all the plastic is well fitted throughout. It’s not an overly expensive headset, but I do think it retains a premium quality look and feel overall.
There’s a lot of strong competition out there for a similar price, but Corsair is a big name and well trusted, giving them a firm advantage over quite a lot of brands. Plus, I love that I can use the same USB dongle for multiple Corsair products, if you have a wireless keyboard and mouse of theirs, it’s a big advantage. The abilitity to use this headset on my PC, PlayStation or mobile devices is a hueg boon though, as it means I only need one headset at home gaming, in the office, or even while sitting on the train. If you want a light, comfortable and stylish headset, the HS55 Wireless Core is perfect for you!
