Corsair K68 RGB Mechanical Gaming Keyboard Review

A Closer Look and Performance

The design of the K68 is pretty familiar to any Corsair fan. Of course, it has just a few minor tweaks and improvements along the way to keep things fresh. However, Corsair hasn’t changed too much as we all know “if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it.”

Large Fonts

The devil is in the details with this keyboard, and while none of these details are particularly new to Corsair keyboards, they are still more than welcome. The large font used on all the keys is very clear to read, even with the lighting on the keyboard turned off. However, the large font also allows for a more significant amount of illumination to pass through the keycap, which should keep the RGB lighting fans happy.

The keycaps come with a satin finish, making them feel nice under the fingertip and a joy to type on. Although, the space bar comes with a textured finish, just to differentiate it from the other switches. Unfortunately, the spacebar follows the usual Corsair tradition of being somewhat noisier than the other switches. Personally, I would add a couple of O-rings to this switches stems. Doing so would dampen the noise a bit, as it can be quite clanky while you are typing.

Mechanical Switches

The rest of the switches on the keyboard, however, are pretty quiet. At least, they’re quiet for a mechanical keyboard. The caps don’t bottom out too hard, and since they use a linear switch, they’re easy on the fingers.

One of the main focuses of this keyboard is it RGB lighting, and it uses glossy white backplate under the keys to better reflect the lighting. The backplate does look pretty cool even with the lights off. However, you’ll see in a few moments it has a striking impact with the lighting on.

Dedicated Multimedia Controls

Tucked into the top right corner, You will find some dedicated multimedia controls. Personally, I love any keyboard which features these keys. If you like to listen to your music while gaming, it allows you to take control with ease. Now, you no longer have to tab out of your game to skip tracks, pause, play, etc. It’s only a minor detail, but it does make a lot of difference.

Pretty much every Corsair keyboard that I can think of uses cherry MX switches. Of course, this model is no exception and features the latest MX red switches with the clear housing. The design allows for much brighter and colourful RGB lighting effects.

Ergonomics

The ergonomics on this keyboard are pretty straightforward. After all, it is a desktop keyboard and maintains that familiar layout. The chassis is quite slim, with a slight wedge shape to promote a better typing and gaming hand position. Of course, there are some kickstands on the underside, allowing you to increase the angle should you so desire.

Despite not being too thick, the keyboard feels rigid, durable, and has an excellent weight to it. When you’re typing, or raging at the keys, it feels firmly planted. Overall, it is unlikely to slide around your desktop. The grip is helped further buy some wide rubber strips on the base of the keyboard. Even on glossier services, it should hold with relative ease.

Great for Work and Gaming

The typing action on the switches is what you would expect from a Cherry switch. If anything the keyboard feels predictably like a Corsair keyboard. The keys are fast and light, and the switches are phenomenal regarding the responsiveness and tactile feel. Overall, it is very responsive and fantastic for gaming, working in the office, or just typing a mundane social media status about your lunch.

I’m a big fan of mechanical keyboards, and this is indeed up there with the best of the best, although I wasn’t expecting anything else. When it comes to gaming, the full-key anti-ghosting and rollover are welcome additions. If you mash your hands down on all of the keys, they will all reliably respond. Sure, it’s not the most productive way to play League of Legends, but in a pinch, it won’t be the keyboard that lets you down.

Fully Programmable

All of the keys on the keyboard or fully programmable. The extensiveness of the options available to you for each key is limited only by your imagination. Any key on the keyboard can be assigned complex macros, reassigned to any other command, as well as extensive lighting customisation.

The lighting options on Corsair keyboards are top of their game. If you desire to program the keyboard to look like an 8-bit version of Super Mario, you can certainly do it. Of course, if you haven’t got the time you could always download somebody else’s profile from the Corsair website.

Get Creative

If you’re even less creative all lazy than that, it does come with a healthy range of built-in effects for you to quickly deploy. The keyboard looks dazzling with its rainbow cycling effects, but if you just want to set it to your favourite shade of purple and leave it be, you can do that in seconds. Either way, it’s going to look fantastic.

Comfort

The detachable wrist rest that is included clips on with ease. It’s great for providing you with a more comfortable and natural wrist position while working and gaming. I do feel like Corsair could have ditched the plastic clip design though. Plastic mounts like this are notorious for breaking easily, but they do get the job done. Overall, I do like the wrist rest, and I wouldn’t have the keyboard without it. But, come on Corsair, most other brands have learnt the wonders of magnets to attach them already.
