Over Power Protection and Max Wattage
Despite being rated to 650 watts, power supplies nearly always have a little extra ‘under the hood’. Generally, this is to provide a margin or error in case of any unusual power demands from the system. While it is, of course, important to ensure that your power supply wattage is suitable for your system, it is always nice to know just how far it can go and (more importantly) to know that the protections in place (to prevent it (or your system) from being damaged) are in place and working.
Well, the good news is that despite only being rated to 650 watts, the Corsair RM650 easily managed to pass our test. Achieving 833 watts before the protections came into place, it clearly has a solid amount of ‘wiggle room’ while also providing consumers with the safe knowledge that if things get a little too excitable, it will cut out before anything is placed at risk.
