How Much Does it Cost?
The Cougar Vortex RGB HPB 120mm PWM HDB Cooling Kid is available now on Amazon for around £49.99. That easily makes this one of the most affordable complete RGB fan kits on the market. Given that you get the hub, the controller, three fans, and it’s all software free, I think that’s pretty good value. It’s also less than half of the equivalent Corsair RGB fan pack.
Overview
Cougar has created a pretty great value bundle here for those wanting to add more RGB fans to their system build. I’ll admit, that while it is a much lower price point than the likes of Corsair, EK, Lian Li and a few others, it does make some compromises. The lighting simply isn’t as vibrant and bright as their rivals, giving them more of a pastel lighting look than anything else. Now, I actually quite like that, and I do think it’s a subjective thing rather than a hardware issue. I can’t tell you what you like though, but I can inform you of the facts.
Build Quality
Lower price doesn’t mean lower quality, and it’s clear that Cougar put some effort in. The little details are all spot on here, such as blacked out cables through, and those neat little carbon fibre details on the corners of each fan. You get anti-vibration rubber mounts on all corners and on both sides of every fan too. Plus, the RGB hub is pretty fantastic with its magnetic mounting system.
Control
This is as simple as RGB control can get really. You can pair it right up to your compatible 5v RGB header on your motherboard, and you’re ready to rock. However, the RGB hub allows you to add even more RGB fans and strips should you need to, and control all of it from the included remote. It’s not basic either, featuring 100 effects such as fades, transitions, patterns and more. Plus, you can alter the speed, direction, colour, and brightness easily enough.
Should I Buy Them?
At this price, they’re pretty good value for some well made and stylish looking fans. They come with the hub and remote included, as well as all the extra cables, anti-vibration mounts etc. The RGB tech isn’t the most advanced, but it more than gets the job done for very little money. A great choice for the budget-focused and beginner RGB enthusiast.
