Gaming Performance

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

As many of you know, quad-core is still king when it comes to gaming. Straight away, the 7740X leaps to the front, showing that despite being a refresh, the 7700K is no laughing matter for gamers. The real star of the show here, however, is the Ryzen 1600X, as overclocking had it beating out the much more expensive Intel Core i9, which costs four times as much! Of course, all the chips did pretty well here, and the Ryzen 3 chips are hardly letting the team down given how affordable they are.

At 4K all the chips are doing a great job, obviously, this is a more GPU bound task, but it’s better for showing how well the CPU allows PCIe throughput. This is a good indication of bottlenecking rather than showing which CPU is fastest. Once overclocked the i9 takes the lead for Deus Ex, but everything else is still competitive.

Rise of the Tomb Raider

It looks like Rise of the Tomb Raider loves running on Intel hardware, with all three Intel chips dominating the scores. Right behind that we have the Ryzen 5’s and 7’s doing very well, but I’m again very impressed with the Ryzen 3 chips. Overclocking still left Intel in the lead, but the Ryzen 3 1300X took me by surprise, moving into 5th place!

When it comes to 4K, Intel’s part is broken up heavily, with the 7740X in the lead, the i9 in the middle, and the 5960X. All Ryzen chips performed about the same too. However, overclocking rocketed the i9 well into the lead, right behind the Ryzen 3 1300X… bet you didn’t expect that, we sure didn’t, and I had to retest a few more times than usual.

Ghost Recon: Wildlands

This is a very demanding game, and getting the right CPU/GPU combination is a big deal for great performance. The Intel chips dominated at 1080p stock, followed by the Ryzen 5’s and 7’s, with the Ryzen 3’s falling way behind. Overclocking quickly changed all that, with the Ryzen 7 1800X taking the top spot, followed by the similarly performing Intel chips, then the usual order with the Ryzen 3’s coming in last place.

Moving up to 4K, core counts were less important than CPU frequency, but everything came out about the same. Overall, each chip let the GPU get on with its job well enough.

Far Cry Primal

The 7900X holds on to the top spot at stock and overclocked values, but not by as much as I would have expected. The 7740X is doing very well though, with great frame rates all round. Behind that is the 1600X, which has been a real trooper throughout all of our tests. Amazingly, the Ryzen 3 1300X is right behind that, even beating out the 5960X and the Ryzen 7’s, which is just amazing. At 4K just about every CPU performed the same, showing the game had no trouble drawing on the power of the GTX 1080 Ti.
