Creative SoundBlasterX G6 Desktop Amplifier Review

A Closer Look

It’s quite a cool looking piece of kit, and rightly so, as this is something you’re going to have out on show. Not only will it be something sitting on your desktop where people can see it, but you’ll have to interact with it and look at it fairly regularly too.

It’s a quality product though, and it has a really rugged and durable build quality. This is enthusiast level audio hardware, and let’s be honest, people who are into that (myself included) can be a pretty picky bunch when it comes to fit and finish.

Down the front, you’ll find two gold plated jacks, clearly marked as headphones and microphone. There’s also a large infinite scrolling wheel, which is primarily used for your volume control but can also be pushed inwards to mute the audio entirely. It can also be used to control the mix of the voice and gaming audio levels so you can dial into your conversation with your team, or tune them out and hear the game better, it’s up to you.

Now, this is where things get more fun. You have three control buttons along the side, as well as the Dolby Audio indication lights. More on those in a moment.

The bottom of the unit has a rubber grip coating and the amp is actually fairly heavy too, so it shouldn’t slide around your TV stand or desktop.

Around the back, everything is clearly laid out so that pretty much anyone could operate this. Both of the ports at the back are optical. You’ll likely only need the line in if you’re just using this for headphones. However, if you have an AV receiver, soundbar or something similar, you can optical out to that and pass through the amp when not using your headphones.

It’s small enough to pick up with one hand, it’s a similar size and weight to a decent powerbank.
