Crucial MX200 M.2 500GB Solid State Drive Review

Final Thoughts

Pricing

At the time of writing, the Crucial MX200 M.2 500GB SSD can be had for £179.99 at Overclockers UK$202.99 at NewEgg or starting from €186.87 through Geizhals.

Conclusion

The Crucial MX200 500GB M.2 drive didn’t blow away with any groundbreaking record speeds, but it performed very well and right on par with the 2.5-inch versions that we’ve previously reviewed. When we take the physical size and drive capacity into consideration, that’s not bad at all. A worthy drive for any desktop or ultrabook with the apropriate slot. Especially those who have motherboards that don’t support the newer standards of M.2 drives need to take a closer look at this SSD.

We saw a sequential read performance around the 560MB per second while the write sequential write performance landed around the 510MB/s. It even got a little faster as it aged, showing better speeds after it had 10TB data put through it.

There isn’t much to say to the optics on such a module, for the most cases you won’t notice it much. In an ultrabook they are naturally hidden and in most desktop systems the view onto the M.2 drive is at least partially blocked by add-on cards and CPU coolers. It still looks nice due to its simplicity of a white sticker with black text on the top of the module.

The price of this drive is very fair, you get a tiny and well performing drive for a price that most people can afford.. The deal becomes even better for those who don’t have a copy of the Acronis True Image HD cloning software yet. While it isn’t everyone that needs this tool right away, it’s a great one to have at your disposal when switching from an old OS drive to a new one.

Pros

  • Compact M.2 form factor
  • Large capacity
  • Good performance
  • Good bundle

Cons

  • None

“The Crucial MX200 M.2 500GB would be a solid drive for any system, may it be ultrabook or desktop. You get a steady performer with a large capacity at a reasonable price.”
