Crytek Black Sea Was Bought by SEGA and Creative Assembly

We all knew that Crytek had problems, but it looks like the company has finally decided to sell off a part of its assets to SEGA Europe and UK-based developer Creative Assembly. The two recently purchased Crytek’s Black Sea Studio, which is based in Bulgaria and includes a team of sixty developers. The team will now operate under Creative Assembly Sofia, and as far as Crytek is concerned, its future is looking quite uncertain, even though there are a few upcoming games that will use CRYENGINE, including Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3 and Prey. Regarding the sale of its Black Sea Studio, Crytek’s Managing Director, Avni Yerli stated the following:

“In the past few weeks, we have worked closely with Creative Assembly and the team in Sofia to ensure that the talented staff at Crytek Black Sea would be well taken care of. We are delighted to be able to announce that SEGA’s acquisition of Crytek Black Sea has been finalized along with the studio’s transition from Crytek to Creative Assembly. This change is a part of the essential steps we are taking to re-focus on our core competencies and ensure Crytek is a healthy and sustainable business moving forward. We would like to thank the Sofia team for their passion and dedication and are looking forward to seeing them do great things as part of Creative Assembly.”

Crytek used to be one of the most appreciated gaming developers in the world, and its Crysis shooter series is still enjoying a bit of popularity to this day. I really do hope that the company will find a way to solve its current financial issues, even though selling parts of itself is not really a good omen.
